Female Northern cardinal
Male Baltimore oriole, female Northern cardinal
The cardinal tells the oriole to back off; this is HER swimmin' hole.
The oriole decides to ignore her threatening chirps.
He hops right in and goes to splashing.
The cardinal, unimpressed, scolds on.
The oriole decides a confrontation is in order. After all, *other* birds get out of his way!
Whoa!!! He discovers Mrs. Cardinal is no pushover, huh-uh, nosiree! Retreat! Retreat!

The cardinal decides it's time to find some supper.
Young house finch
The oriole, seeing the cardinal is gone, returns for his final evening ablutions.
A robin comes along, wanting her turn. The oriole refuses. The robin, though bigger, is not so full of spice.
Mr. Oriole is allllmost done with his bath...

Then checks out the locals.
"No cats down there, are there?"
"Okay, on with the primping and preening."
A little fluffing of the feathers...
...a bit of shaking...
...a little spinning...
"There! How do I look?"
