Photos: Hill City, South Dakota

Nestled deep inside the Black Hills along the western edge of South Dakota, the town of  Silver City is a little community with a rich history.

Silver City was settled in 1876 by the Gorman brothers who came to the Black Hills from Canada in search of precious metals.  They set up two mines:  the Diana Lode and The Lady of the Hills.  Although initially called Camp Gorman, the town was eventually platted and renamed Silver City.  By the year 1878, the population of  Silver City had grown to over 300 residents.

From the 2010 Census (the most recent Census number available, as it is no longer tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau), Silver City had a population of 59 people.  Silver City’s elevation is 4,620 feet (1408 meters).
