Photos: From Cortez to La Junta, Colorado, Part 1

Sunrise over the Super 8 motel at Cortez, Colorado

Entrance to Mesa Verde National Park

Mule buck running alongside the road

Imagine what the house must look like, with an entrance like that!  We couldn't see it from the road.

Heading over Wolf Creek Pass

The four-wheel-drive Massey Ferguson tractor Larry bought in Dove Creek, Colorado

Retaining wall to keep falling boulders from landing on the road

The engine is running a little hot

There's smoke! -- where's it coming from??

Turns out, there was a **fire** under the hood! Fortunately, it wasn't the motor; it was only insulation on the engine wall. Larry sloshed water on it, then pulled that insulation out so it wouldn't happen again.

It wouldn't be the *only* fire we had on Wolf Creek Pass, mind you. Read on.

Back on the road -- heading downhill. **Steeply** downhill.

Pulling off to check the brakes, and to put it in four-low. We climbed out --- smelled hot brakes. And... something is on fire!!! Turned out, it was only dirt and grease on the shield around the brakes, rather than the brakes themselves, thankfully. Larry put it out with the last of our water. Better believe, we bought a new fire extinguisher when we got to Alamosa!
