Photos: from Crawford, Nebraska, to Home (2)

See the Purdum sign? A 59-year-old fire chief from the little village of Purdum had a heart attack and died while helping fight the wildfire.

Bald eagle.  I wonder if he lost his home to the fire?  At least it's not nesting season.

That's one big mule!

Look, he noticed I was taking his picture!

Back in the Land of Irrigation --

But it doesn't look like this pivot has done much pivoting lately.

In the village of Taylor, Nebraska, there are caricature cutouts, painted in grayscale, all around the little town.  These figures represent townspeople from the past, often ancestors of some who live there today.  Too bad we didn't get there in time to go in the little gift store and coffeeshop.

We parked along the wide main street, which is also the highway.  I don't think more than one car went by the entire half-hour we were there.

Doesn't look like they'll get too hot in there, anyway.

Then it got dark... and soon we were home.  And that was the end of our vacation.
