And hour and a half after dropping off Larry and Victoria and watching them paddle off down the Middle Loup, they called and asked me to come pick them up. I think the road mileage to their portage point was barely three miles -- but I'd warrant their river route was many times that, for the river curves and bends deeply all along the way.
It was a chilly, cloudy day, just 51°, but the exercise of rowing, along with their sweaters, life jackets, hats, and gloves, kept them comfortably warm.
