Photos: From Idaho Springs, Colorado, to Dillon, Colorado

Driving along Clear Creek in Idaho Springs, Colorado

The Argo Gold Mine and Mill

Many of the houses built in the mid to late 1800s have been beautifully restored.

Walking to The Soap Shop, a favorite boutique in Idaho Springs.

Everything is handmade on the premises.

The 6th Avenue Hose House #2 of Idaho Springs, Colorado.
.
This little hose house was built in 1925 after the original 1878 structure was ironically lost to a fire.  It was constructed of locally produced brick with the purpose of housing the second hose cart in the city. When the fire department was reorganized in 1920 and the independent hose companies consolidated, the hose house was no longer needed as an integral part of the Idaho Springs fire protection system.  The building served for a time as the city's maintenance shop. After sitting vacant for a number of years, however, a joint effort of the Historical Society, the Fire Department volunteers and the city restored the building with help from the Colorado Historical Society. Today it is operated as a fire-fighting museum by the Historical Society.

South on Rte. 103 toward Mt. Evans.  The road up the mountain is closed; we'll soon turn around.

On I70 heading west toward Dillon, Colorado.

The dual Johnson (east-going) and Eisenhower (west-going) Tunnels.  The Johnson Tunnel was built in 1979; the Eisenhower in 1973.

The tunnels take one under the Great Divide.  We have sometimes entered the east side of the tunnel in 45° sunshine and exited on the west into a 25° blizzard.  Odd sensation!

Dillon

Saved from the original townsite of #Dillon#Colorado, the #1883 #schoolhouse still operates as a #museum for the #SummitHistoricalSociety, now celebrating its 51st anniversary.

Larry, fishing in the cold, wind, and snow.  He has a Colorado fishing license, so he must fish!

Meanwhile, I am in the nice, warm camper, editing photos.
