Photos: Trip to Florida, Day 3, Part 4 -- from the Mountains of North Georgia to Madison, Georgia

It was rainy (or snowy) and dark, and most of these pictures were taken from the Jeep.  So many are not perfectly clear... but I don't take photos so much to win prizes as to preserve memories.

The weather will be better tomorrow, and the photography in better focus.
Raininess notwithstanding, this was pretty country.

Mineral Bluff Baptist Church sign.  There are a great number of Baptist churches in this part of the country.

We arrived in Blairsville at 3:30 p.m.  Appropriately enough, we immediately saw lots of police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks, all with sirens blaring.

Victoria offered her explanation:  “They must have lots of cats get stuck in trees around here, and it must be National Cat Day, as they’re all in such a big hurry to get them down.”

Just goes to show, someone always knows the answer.

Do you think Brasstown Bald is upside down today?

It is covered with clouds.

Tesnatee Gap, ele. 3138

Just as we pulled into the overlook parking area, the wind threw billows upon billows of snowflakes, swirling clouds of them, over the mountains.  Wet, heavy snow – it sunk right through the ground when it landed!

Well, that is, the temperature was too high for anything to stick.  It didn’t last long.  Seemed odd to me... different from what I’m accustomed to, at home or in the Rocky Mountains, somehow.

Not far to the east was the 4,783-foot Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest mountain.  We saw it – dimly – through the fog and rain and snow.  There was a cloud swirling around the top of it.

Smoke signals?

Larry, new binoculars.  I wonder if he has enough Indian in him to read the message?

See the wild turkeys beside the road up there on the left?

One took flight...

...sailed right in front of our windshield, on up into a tree, and there he roosted!

Chattahoochee River

What happened here?  Someone upset and spilt their campsite, maybe?

Treehouse sans tree?

Sarah Lynn and Larry

The first thing they brought us was a little 12-grain loaf of bread fresh out of the oven, on a cutting board, with a bread knife, and a little bowl full of butter pats.

My chef salad.  That plate could do double duty as a meat platter!

My clam chowder.

Larry's steak, baked potato, and green beans (flavored with bacon).

Victoria's battered fish, green beans, and 'loaded' potato.

When it got dark, they started turning on the lights outside.

We got a room at the Hampton Inn in Madison, Georgia.
It's 430 miles to Daytona Beach.
